If you hear squealing, pay close attention to where it’s coming from. If the sound originates under the hood, it is likely to be caused by a belt. If the squeal can only be heard when applying the brakes, your brake pads are probably worn down and in need of replacement. Grinding sounds can also be indicative of brake problems. Since grinding occurs when metal rubs against metal, this sound could occur as the result of a multitude of problems.
A growling sound that changes or goes away when turning the wheel is a sign of a bad wheel bearing. Whining sounds, especially those that are louder or only heard when going around turns, are often symptoms of ball joints that are in need of replacement. Does your car seem to growl or hum, especially at certain speeds? Your tires may be worn down or in need of balancing.
What To Do When You Hear Strange Car Sounds
