3 Ways to Improve Gas Mileage With Simple Car Maintenance
This guide updates our original gas-mileage post for modern vehicles. The goal is simple: show which maintenance items can help fuel economy, which claims are outdated, and when poor MPG is a symptom of a problem that needs testing.
The short answer: Keep tires inflated to the door-jamb pressure, use the oil grade your manufacturer calls for, replace filters when they are dirty, and fix check-engine or rough-running problems early.
Maintenance will not turn a truck into a hybrid, but it can help your vehicle get closer to the fuel economy it was built to deliver.

Why Your Gas Mileage Gets Worse
Fuel economy drops when the engine has to work harder, the wheels do not roll cleanly, or the computer has to compensate for a problem. Some causes are simple. Others need diagnostic testing.
Common maintenance-related causes include:
- Low tire pressure
- Wrong oil grade or overdue oil service
- Dirty engine air filter
- Worn spark plugs or ignition parts
- Check engine light, oxygen sensor, fuel trim, or emissions-system issues
- Dragging brakes, alignment issues, or tire problems
- Heavy cargo, roof racks, idling, and aggressive driving
The best first step is to compare your current fuel economy to what the car normally does for your driving pattern. A sudden drop matters more than a number that has always been low for the vehicle.
1. Check Tire Pressure
Tire pressure is the easiest fuel-economy check most drivers can do at home. Under-inflated tires create extra rolling resistance, which makes the engine use more fuel. They can also wear faster and affect handling.
FuelEconomy.gov says proper tire inflation can improve gas mileage by 0.6% on average and up to 3% in some cases. It also notes that under-inflated tires can lower MPG by about 0.2% for every 1 psi drop in the average pressure of all tires.
How to Check Tire Pressure
- Check tires cold, before a long drive.
- Use the pressure on the driver's door jamb or owner's manual.
- Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.
- Check all four tires and the spare if your vehicle has one.
- Recheck after big temperature swings.

2. Use the Right Oil and Replace Filters When Needed
Oil choice matters. Your engine is designed around a specific oil grade. Using the wrong grade can increase friction and reduce fuel economy. FuelEconomy.gov says using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil can improve gas mileage by 1% to 2% compared with the wrong grade.
Oil changes also create a good checkpoint for the rest of the car. During routine service, ask for a look at belts, hoses, fluid levels, leaks, tires, lights, and visible brake condition. That quick look often catches the little things that become bigger problems later.
What About Air Filters?
This is where older advice needs an update. On modern fuel-injected, computer-controlled vehicles, replacing a clogged engine air filter usually improves performance more than MPG. On older carbureted vehicles, a clogged air filter can affect both performance and fuel economy.
That does not mean filters are unimportant. A dirty engine air filter can still hurt acceleration and make the engine work harder. A dirty cabin filter can weaken heat, AC, and defrost airflow. In dusty Colorado conditions, filters can load up faster than the calendar suggests.

3. Fix Engine Problems Early
A vehicle with a check engine light, rough idle, hesitation, hard start, or sudden MPG drop needs diagnosis. Modern vehicles can sometimes seem to drive normally while the engine computer is compensating for a sensor, ignition, fuel, or emissions problem.
FuelEconomy.gov warns that a check engine light can point to a problem that reduces fuel economy, increases emissions, or leads to costlier repairs later. That is why the light should not be ignored just because the car still starts.
Poor MPG Symptoms That Deserve a Look
- Check engine light or flashing check engine light
- Rough idle, hesitation, or stalling
- Fuel smell, exhaust smell, or visible smoke
- Slow starts or weak acceleration
- MPG drops suddenly with no change in driving
- New vibration, dragging feeling, or pull while driving
A code reader gives a starting point, not the whole answer. An oxygen-sensor code, for example, can come from the sensor, wiring, exhaust leak, fuel mixture, or another engine issue. Good auto diagnostics connect the code to test results before parts are replaced.
Driving Habits That Support Good Fuel Economy
Maintenance matters, but driving habits still affect MPG. Smooth acceleration, steady speeds, less idling, and removing heavy cargo all help the maintenance work pay off.
